Tea Tree ( Melaleuca alternifolia )

Extraction is by steam distillation of the leaves and twigs.

Odour - warm, fresh spicy-camphoraceous

History - probably one of the most well known oils. Has a long history of use by the Australian aborigines for its medicinal properties. Extensively researched scientificallyin recent times - found to be active against bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Uses - in skin care for acne, athlete's foot, blisters, burns, cold sores, dandruff, insect bites, oily skin rashes, verucae, warts and wounds. Helpful for asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, coughs, sinusitis and whooping cough.  Can be used in a vapouriser, with other oils such as eucalyptus, during the winter. Has been used, diluted in water, to wash dirty wounds.

blends with -cypress, eucalyptus, geranium, ginger, junper, lavender, lemon, mandarin, orange, peppermint, pine, rosemary, thyme.

Safety - non-toxic, non-irritant, possible sensitisation in some.
