Peppermint ( Mentha piperita )


Odour - strongly piercing, refreshing, sharp, menthol aroma.

History - domestic herb.  Has been used since the time of the Egyptians for medicinal purposes. Commonly used for digestive disorders in many pharmaceutical products as well as toiletries such as toothpaste and detergents.

Uses - pain relieving properties used for myalgia, neuralgia, muscular pain,, lumbago, bruises, joint pain and insect bites. Has been used for dyspepsia, nausea, stomach pains, diarrhoea, flatulence, travel sickness.  Clears the head and helpful for poor  concentration or mental fatigue, calms the nerves.  Cold compresses to the forehead and temples are helpful for headaches and migraines. Has been used for relieving cold symptoms, for sinus congestion or inflammation.  Relieves irritation or itching of the skin in very low dose (1% or less).  It is both cooling (initial effect) and
warming.

Blends with - basil, bergamot, cajuput, cedarwood, cypress, eucalyptus, the citrus oils, marjoram, niaouli, pine, rosemary, thyme.

Safety - non-toxic, non-irritant (except in high concentration), may
be sensitising in some individuals.
