Ginger ( Zingiber officinale )
Extraction is by steam distillation of the unpeeled, dried, ground root.
Odour - spicy, sharp, warm and pleasant with a hint of lemon and pepper.
History - domestic spice. Traditionally used as a digestive aid. Preserved and crystallized ginger is a popular sweet in the East and the West.
Uses - well known as a warming stimulant and as an aid for digestive problems; awakens the appetite and settles the stomach. An ideal remedy for treating nausea or vomiting, including travel sickness. As part of a blend makes an effective, warming massage oil for muscular aches and pains, poor circulation, fatigue; is helpful for arthritis, rheumatism sprains and strains. useful for colds, coughs, and sore throats; indicated at the onset of cold or flu, with feelings of cold, chilliness and fatigue. Warms and stimulates the lungs so helpful with chronic bronchitis. Activates will-power, stimulates initiative and restores determination.
Blends with - black pepper, cedarwood (Atlas), cypress, frankincense, the citrus oils, rosemary, tea tree.
Safety - non-toxic, non-irritant, may cause sensitisation in some.
